Fonts Going Green
There has been a lot of talk lately about what we can do to help the planet. One way is to incorporate environmentally-friendly fonts, known as ecofonts to cut down on the amount of ink that is used in printing. And (bonus!) it cuts down on cost as well.
How Ecofonts Work
Ecofonts insert holes into the typed letters when you print them. The best part is that the holes do not effect legibility. This reduces the effect on your wallet and on the planet (a little motivation for anyone).
You can still use the fonts that you are used to using, but with an eco variant instead.
How Ecofonts Help Your Wallet
Ink and toner represent the most costly part of printing. Using an ecofont can cut down on the amount of toner or ink by up to 25%. This can be a drastic savings for businesses.
How Ecofonts Help the Planet
Producing ink is pretty expensive in terms of CO2. By reducing the amount of ink and toner used to print, you can decrease your carbon footprint. This is a great way to be an advocate of social responsibility.
There’s Another Way
Not sold on a font full of holes? There are other ways to reduce the amount of ink used for printing. For example, as the University of Wisconsin found, using Century Gothic instead of Arial in your print design can save about 30% of ink. That’s even better than some ecofonts.
Something as simple as changing fonts can have a great impact for your business and for the planet. Need help getting the right design for your marketing materials that uses these earth0friendly fonts? Alphabetix can help!

Who knew?
I never thought of how a font can use a lot more ink, but this totally makes sense. I’ll have to reconsider which fonts I use on forms and documents I print in the future.
Thank you for this eye opening information.
