Web 2.0 – An Introduction

Web 2.0

What is this whole Web 2.0 thing you’ve been hearing about? Web 2.0 refers to the way in which the internet is being used now. It is no longer a passive entity that people use to receive information. The internet has become highly interactive, using social media to share information and participate in its distribution.

The term Web 2.0 was coined to describe the use of the internet that is interactive and utilizes user-generated input. Common forms of both social media and Web 2.0 applications include Forums, Social Networking (Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn), Blogs (WordPress, Blogspot),  Micro Blogging (Twitter), Wikis (Wikipedia), Video Sharing (Youtube), Event Planning (Meet-Up, Evite), and Photo Sharing (Picasa, Flickr).

So, why should you care about Web 2.0? If you’re a business and you want to succeed in the current internet climate, then using social media is a great first step. Using social networking sites like Facebook, in conjunction with a blog and a microblog like Twitter, can buy you a lot of coverage with a diversity of crowds.  The more presence you develop on the web, the more likely you are to reach potential clients.  Look at it this way, if you post a blog post that then gets tweeted by someone with 3,000 followers, that’s 3,000 people who may potentially view your blog that otherwise might not have.  You can only meet and network with just so many people face-to-face. Let the internet help you network with so many more.

This may all seem a little bit daunting. If so, Alphabetix can teach you how to use social media marketing and make the most out of this whole crazy Web 2.0 madness.
