While posting about new and featured products or services on Twitter is a great idea, it’s also a good idea to tweet other information such as discounts or promotions and other interesting tidbits that pertain to your business.
Discounts or Promotions
Twitter is great place to announce a promotion or offer an exclusive discount to Twitter followers (and people can receive these updates on their cell phones, so they know to stop by on their lunch break or call right away).
One great example is a chain of coffee shops in Gresham, Oregon called Silk Espresso (@SilkEspresso). They offer discounts to their “Devotees” like a free 12oz drink with the purchase of a pound of coffee.
Another well-known example of this is NAKEDPizza (@NakedPizza), a natural pizza company in New Orleans. They offer discounts to their customers through Twitter. At one point, they offered a discount to all customers who said they were calling from Twitter. 68.60% of their business that day was from Twitter. Not too shabby.
And, most people have heard of the great job Dell (@DellOutlet) does posting coupon codes and sales to Twitter all the time. (Just a tip, if you need computer equipment check out Dell on Twitter first.)
So, how can you apply this to your business?
If you offer aromatherapy, you can offer a 10% discount to Twitter followers that give you the specific discount code you posted on Twitter.
If you run a movie theater or playhouse, you can offer two free tickets to a movie or play to the first three people to retweet about your latest showing. Not only will you be giving something great to people who like your product, you will be able to reach an even wider audience with those retweets.
Other Great Information
Twitter is a great place to feature some behind the scenes information about your business.
The Portland Trail Blazers (@pdxtrailblazers) is great at this, posting information about injuries and real time announcements about what is happening during games.
Kodak (@kodakCB) also does a great job by posting user reviews of cameras and webinars that they attend.
How can you make this work for your business?
If you are attending a conference, post about what speaker you enjoy listening to. This is a great way to show that you keep up to date on your business and to draw people into the conversation (maybe they loved the same speaker).
If you are a plumber, post feedback that your customers have provided about how affordable and speedy your services were.
If you are an accountant, offer tax information as “did you know” tips, like “did you know you can write off the cost of your computer if you use it for business?” and provide a link to more information on your site.
Getting into the minutiae of Twitter can be a little daunting. We’re here to help.
