Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – An Introduction
You have probably heard of the term Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, but you may not know what it really is. Have no fear, Alphabetix is here to help.
So, let’s start by defining the term. Search Engines are how internet users find websites. Websites that have good search engine rankings are easier for users to find. You want your site to be easy for your potential customers to find. Therefore, you want a good search engine ranking. This is where search engine optimization comes in. Good SEO helps your site get better search engine rankings and makes your site easier to find. You want your website to be accessible to search engines so that the chance that your site will be found is better.
Companies that tell you that there is a magic bullet to get you at the top of the search engines are telling you a lie. There is no way to work your way to the top except to follow certain guidelines. You can’t buy a higher ranking. You can’t spam your way to the top. You want your site to move up the in search engine ranking organically. Here are just a couple of the most basic ways to make sure your site is doing its best at getting you organically-earned search engine rankings.
Make sure you have content on your site that is full of the keywords that people who would search for your business would use. If you’re a cabinet maker, make sure you have terms like “cabinet, cabinetry, wood working” and your city and state location throughout the text on your website. Different pages within your site may have different keywords. You may have a page about custom high end cabinetry, in which you would want to include keywords such as the names of the woods you use or the types of finishes. You may have another page that offers pre-built cabinetry. You would want to make sure that page has keywords such as “pre-built” or “economical”. Remember, most people who are looking for a service may not know specific technical terms.
You can’t put keywords on your website without using text. A number of businesses, particularly creative businesses, think that showing pretty pictures will draw people to their site. This isn’t the case. A page that is full of pictures with no text is hard to find. If you’re an artist, by all means post pictures of your work, but also make sure that you include text that describes your work as well. And, while you’re at it, make sure your images have names that are relevant and descriptive. Someone may happen upon your page by doing an image search.
Of course, search engine optimization is a much more complex enterprise than making sure you have keywords on your pages. If you need help getting your website better search engine rankings, Alphabetix can help.
