While you may love a Spam sandwich, we’re pretty sure, that like us, you can’t stand comment spam.

If you use WordPress for blogging, you should know about this great spam-fighting plugin. Akismet, created by Matt Mullenweg and crew of WordPress, is a plugin that checks your comments against the Akismet web service to determine if they seem like spam.  It allows you to review the comments it marks as spam and suggest comments not marked as spam.

When you get a new comment, trackback, or pingback, it gets submitted to the Akismet web service which makes a determination based on hundreds of tests. It then returns the comment with a spam rating or not.

The best part of Akismet is that you don’t have to worry about maintaining a list of spammers. Akismet does it for you and it offers up-to-the-second protection. You don’t have to do any maintenance.

Another great feature of Akismet is that its not just for WordPress.  There are at least 20 other systems or platforms that Akismet can be used on, and the number is growing.
