Be timeless – When you pick a logo for your business, keep in mind that this is going to be a significant part of your image, so make sure you pick something that you’ll like today and in the future and that can translate with the growth of your business.

Get a good fit – Part of what a logo does for your business is to graphically indicate the identity of your company. If you are a law firm, you probably don’t want a cartoon duck. On the flip side, if you are a preschool, having an embossed polo horse probably isn’t appropriate either. Make sure your logo actually says something about what you do, and that you don’t just pick it because it’s cute.

Size Does Matter – Logos need to be able to be resized both larger and smaller. They need to be clear and readable whether they are on a business card or a banner. Logos with tons of detail are hard to see correctly on a business card. Keep in mind that you may also want to have them embroidered or screen printed on clothing or other promotional products.

Coat of Many Colors – Just like size, color matters with a logo. Logos with a lot of different colors may be difficult to read when they are small. They may also be costly to reproduce on promotional products. Your logo may also need to be printed in black and white in newspapers. So, if the entire logo depends on colors for meaning, it may lose its punch. Try picking a couple of colors or a single color with varying tones. And, don’t be afraid of black and white.

Be versatile – Your logo has to be able to be used on a variety of products such as letterhead, business cards, signs and banners, promotional products, and your website. Make sure it will read well in all of those places.

Bring in the pros – It often happens that when businesses are getting started, they are looking for ways to save money. One place not to scrimp is with the design of your logo, which will visually represent your business. Having a professional design your logo can be good for you in the long run. A professional will create a logo for you that will speak well of your business, that will be resizable, and will look great in all forms of print and online media.
