It is important to remember that visitors to your page are like browsers in a store. They will respond to the way that they are treated. That’s why many high-end retailers have sales associates greet you within five seconds. They know that a smile and a “how may I help you?” can go a long way in turning a browser into a customer. So, how do you turn people browsing your site into customers or clients? Treat them well!
1. Remember that visitors are coming to your site to see what you have to offer them. Know your customer and know what they want. A salesperson at a department store would not bring out a bathing suit to a woman shopping in the evening gown department. The content and products listed on your pages should reflect what your customer is looking for. Make the customer the focus.
2. Approach your customers with the appropriate tone. Provide them with information that they can really use and that is easy to understand. If you’re a real estate agent, don’t just post that a tax rebate exists; tell your customer about what that rebate means for them. They’ll be glad they found someone that can relate important information to them without being condescending.
3. Avoid too much flash. A lot of flashing or moving content on a page is distracting to your customer. It’s the equivalent of walking down the strip in Las Vegas. Too much stimulus is not a good thing. Also, try not to over load your site with content that takes a long time to load. People will leave before they’ve ever seen your product.
4. Also, avoid pop-ups. They make your site look like its not reputable and its just plain annoying. It’s the equivalent of having fliers handed to you when you walk down the street or left on your windshield. You visitor will leave if they’re bombarded with pop-up silliness.
Remember that your site speaks for you and you want it to say, “professional and informative,” not “annoying.”
